JV Results

This past week is a week that was very unpredictable and one that we usually would not have to deal with unless there is an unseasonable warm up.  It could have been an overall week that was a struggle and would effect the direction of the team in a very negative way, but it actually turned into one of the bigger positives that we as a program have had in a number of years, and that was evident with the JV skiers and their race on Wednesday.  They had the opportunity to ski on the challenging trails at Woodland Trails in Elk River again, but also on a day that was near 40 degrees and on real snow, thus the chance for dirty and slushy conditions.  And what came out of that meet were efforts that were impressive.  They took the opportunity to race, worked hard, and enjoyed what it was they were doing.  And even when there was struggle, or someone telling a couple of our boys they were going the wrong way when they were trying to do the short race and ended up on the long course, they did not quit, they kept moving, and were determined to finish no matter what. It shows the character of these athletes and as coaches, its something that makes our jobs easier.

There is still a possible couple of weeks left, but this team and this season, are so much fun and have so much determination.  They got the opportunity to do one of the most challenging activities and they put full energy into it, they do it with so much optimism, they like being around each other and they are having fun while they get to be on snow.  It makes one smile, and I am glad that what I told them on day 1 to bring a smile every day, was so easy for them to do!!

So, let's finish out the season, let's build off of this, and let's go have some more fun!!

Thanks,
Denny

Practice Locations

Practice today, Thursday, will be at Bunker Memorial and we will be on skate skis.  For Friday we will be at Bunker Campgroud and on our classic skis.  Saturday, the Varsity skiers and anyone that would like to, we would like for them to be go to Theo Wirth to work on some technique and tactical items to get ready for the Section Meet.  There will not be a bus or a set time, however, coaches will be down there and we will work on a time with the skiers to meet up.

Moving forward, it is hard to say where we will be able to ski based on conditions of the trails.  I will try to get a couple of days set up at Elm Creek as back up to make sure we do get on snow.  Also, even though we currently don't have any races planned for those not racing next week, we still would like for everyone to keep coming to practices.  The more time on snow, the more improvements that can be made and every day these skiers are getting better. But, these are not mandatory for those not racing, just an opportunity for them to keep improving.

As coaches we are going to be discussing the end of the season and how we would like to end it as well as when equipment is turned in and an end of season gathering.  As soon as we have it figured out we will let you know.

Thanks
Denny

Results and Section/State Update

Our individual results from today are now posted on the right side of the blog.  Once I get the overall results I'll post those and comments as well.

A couple of other items, we were told today what the final decision on State is going to be, thus how Sections and qualifying will work.  State this year is going to be a two day event, Girls on Thursday, March 11th and Boys on Friday, March 12th. What this means for qualifying for State at Sections is what we have had in the past, the top 2 teams and the top 6 individuals not on those teams will qualify for the State Meet.  With Sections itself, ours will be on Wednesday, March 3rd at Theo Wirth and they will be run slightly different and more condensed in some regards to what we saw the last two days.

The Boys will be racing in the morning in pods of 4, with all of the teams present at one time and there will be 3 pods.  Classic will be first and skate the second race.  The top pod will be the first group to start, and then about 18 mins later the second pod will start (so roughly the time it will take for pod 1 to finish and clear the area), and then another 18 or so mins and the third pod will start.  What this will do is level the course conditions issue that we saw this week.  The second race then will start 1 hour after each pods first races started.  So, from start to finish for all 3 pods it will be less than 2 hours total.  Then, the Girls will be in the afternoon, roughly an hour after the Boys finish and go through the same process.

I have not been told yet what the official start time for the first pods will be, thus I cannot say for sure on what all of the times will be. Some of this may still change as the logistics of everything gets figured out.  It may seem complicated, but we will explain it to the kids in detail and it will actually work to their favor because they could get an extra 20 mins of rest in between their races.

Also, now that we know how many athletes we can race, we as coaches will finalize the teams and let everyone know tomorrow, Thursday.

As for Thursday, to have a little fun, we are going to have a "Favorite Jersey" day for practice.  For all of the skiers that have jersey's from other sports, you can wear it tomorrow for practice.

Thanks and any questions, let me know,
Denny

Girls NWSC Results

Positives, so many positives.  In trying to think about what to say about the Girl's chance to ski the NWSC Meet today, the biggest thing that keeps coming back to me is "positive."

The course was not easy, the conditions were not easy, and so many other things that could have made the day completely different than how it turned out were starring them in the face.  The Girl's took 8th today of 12 teams, though after being seeded 9th. What that meant is that the Girl's that skied today put forth everything they could, took all that they have been learning, all that they have within themselves and used it to the best of their abilities, not letting anything bring them down or take them away from what they could and did do.

It was so fun to watch all 10 Girl's race today, really race, gutting it out up long uphills and pushing up and over so they could get to the finish line as fast as they could.  And what were they like at the finish, happy, proud, positive, and feeling like they did the best that they could, and as I coach and coaching staff, what more could you ask for.

This is a day that we can use as a whole program, of what is possible when you trust what is in yourself, trust what you have learned, and just put forth an effort you may never have known existed.  We can grow from this, and the Girl's that raced today are great examples and role models for what is possible and how to do it with a smile!

Lilah G earned All Conference honors by placing 8th overall, and impressing some Champlin Boy's who couldn't believe she double poled the whole Catwalk, but Ilsa H also earned All Conference honors, moving up 10 spots after the first race to tie for 35th overall.

Overall results can be found at weimertiming.com under NWSC.

Next up, JV at Woodland Trails in Elk River on Wednesday.  Bus leaves at 2:00, Girl's race at 3:30, Boy's at 4:15.

Thanks to all of the parents that were able to be out at the meet today and thank you to the Girl's for all the work you did today.  Let's keep building off of this and see if we can move up some more next week at Sections.

Thanks,
Denny

Boys Results

Despite it being a very lovely weather day, it was some very tough conditions for the Boy's today in a very difficult two race format with less than a half an hour of rest.  But, the Boy's worked to the end and were able to grab 6th overall today, moving up two spots from the seed we were given, missing 5th place by two points!!  The trail conditions on the day did change and may have played a factor in where some individuals and some teams placed, but the focus for us is to race the best that you can for that day and that course, no matter what we are not able to control.

We did have two Boy's get All-Conference though, Aaron and Josh, with Peyton and Ryan both gain Honorable Mention.  Overall meet results can be found at the following site, weimertiming.com, look under NWSC Meet.

Great work by all of the Boy's, but there is still plenty of room for improvement and we will do what we can to get them ready for whatever the Section Meet might bring us!.

Now onto the Girls, once again racing at 1:00 and 1:40.  Despite the temps being warm again, it doesn't appear that there will be much variation in the conditions throughout the day, so should be fun to watch the racing begin!

Thanks,
Denny

Conference Meet Details

Here are some last minute details for Monday and Tuesday's NWSC Meet.
- Boys will be at 1:00 (Classic) and 1:40 (Skate) on Monday and will be racing against Anoka and Spring Lake Park.  Bus will leave at 11:00.
- Girls will be at 1:00 (Classic) and 1:40 (Skate) on Tuesday and will be racing against Blaine and Champlin Park. Bus will leave at 11:00.
- No one will be allowed into the Trailhead, and no teams camps will be allowed inside either.  We will have both of our tents set up near the Start/Finish area.
- Spectators are allowed but in the Start/Finish area or team camps.
- Parking may be in the Lots by the Trailhead or further down by the Chalet. Parking will open up as other teams/spectators leave.
- No results will be posted until all 4 sections have been completed.  You will be able to find the results at the following link: weimertiming.com, thus there will not be an awards ceremony.  All Conference Medals (which is the top 36 combined times) will be sent to us at a later date.
- Team scoring will consist of each teams top 6 skiers, but all skiers will be given points, thus push other teams scores lower. Unlike in CC Running, high score wins (1st place gets 120 points, 2nd 119 ...).
- The course has changed due to some changes that Wirth has done to their course.  The new course is to go straight out and to the left on Green Meadow, cut back onto Ridgeline (the Catwalk), North Finger and back to the Stadium (Maps of Trails at Theo Wirth).
- Once the team is completed with their race, they will be expected to leave right away, including spectators to keep the number of people at Wirth low.

As for the rest of the team and the rest of the week, on Monday there will be a regular practice, bus leaving at 3:15, starting practice at 3:30, Skate at Bunker Campground.
On Tuesday, All Boys and any JV girl will be practicing at Bunker Campground, bus leaving at 3:15, starting at 3:30, Skate.
Wednesday, JV race at Woodland Trails in Elk River (Varsity will come to do their workout as well).  Bus leaves at 2:00, first race at 3:30, skiers will have their choice of skate or classic.
Thursday and Friday we will be at Bunker Golf Course, technique to be determined depending on the weather.

I think this is everything.  Hope to see some of you out on the trails this week!!
Thanks
Denny

Conference Line Up

Here is the line up for next Monday for the boys and Tuesday for the girls. First race, classic, will be at 1:00 on both days, and the second race at 1:40, skate, on both days.

Boys: Josh, Ryan, Aaron, Peyton, Ricky, Jennings, Jacob C, Caleb, Joey, Eli

Girls: Lilah, Ilsa, Zoe, Josie, Ava, Tara, Akala, Julia, Katrina

Spectators are allowed but once again not in the team area or the start/finish area. Both races will be on the same course and will be about 3.2k long (Catwalk, North Finger, Trail 18). I will put a map on this weekend.

Those that are racing on Monday will wax on Sunday at the high school at 2:00. All those racing on Tuesday and Wednesday will wax after practice on Monday (normal practice time at 3:30). For anyone that will be waxing on their own, Wirth does not allow any Fluoro waxes, so we will not be using any.

All those that are not on this list will be racing on Wednesday at Woodland Trails in Elk River, first race at 3:30.

More information will be posted this weekend, but don’t want to overload everyone with everything that is happening!

Thanks

Denny

Conference Times

This morning we found out what our time slots for the Conference Meets will be.  Both the Boy's and the Girl's will be racing at 1:00pm on their respective days.  Bus will leave at 11:00am for both as well.  I will post all of the information later today.

Week Update

A solid afternoon of skiing was had by all today!  After many struggled yesterday with the classic course and the new snow, they fought the tired legs and put forth a solid effort in skate and ended the day with what would be called racing to the finish.  There is so much that can be said about racing in general, just the mental struggle that goes on in ones head throughout the race, but when you are tired and still pushing all the way to the finish, it says a lot about what you are made of, and this years Cardinal Skiers are getting stronger every day and the potential moving forward with all of them grows as well.  As a coach, this day may not stick out much on the "importance" of the race, but it is one that we can look back on as a point of reference and how it was important to see them race in back to back days and be stronger on the second day.  They put a lot of work in the past 2 weeks, despite the cold, and did so with a smile! What is making this season a positive one is that every day all of these skiers show up with a smile, work hard, and help each other out. But, things are not over yet, we still have at least two weeks left and we will do what we can to continue to improve!

For Friday's practice, we have asked our Varsity to head to Theo Wirth to do some last minute prep work for the Conference Meet next week.  Everyone else will be skiing at Bunker Campground, skating, bus leaving at 3:15, skiing until about 5:00.

Usually I would post the teams for the Conference Meet right now, but I am waiting to hear on a few things before I can post them.

Saturday we will have a bus, leaving at 8:00am and heading to Battle Creek in St Paul to do some hill work since Wirth will be closed for races this weekend.  Both Classic and Skate work will be done. We are hoping to be back by 11:00.

I am hoping to hear some time on Friday what time slot we will be skiing for the Conference races.  Once I hear I will post all of the information on how the races will work, what time, and any other details that will be important.  For those that do not race in the Conference Meet, they will be racing on Wednesday at Woodland Trails in Elk River.

Last item, for those that are interested in the team pictures taken on Tuesday, please text the code PGET84325 to 90738 and then David Banks Studios will notify you when the pictures are available to be viewed and ordered.

Thanks for all of the support!
Denny

Thursday Results

Our Individual and the Overall Meet results are now posted on the right side of the blog.  I will get more info out as soon as I am done with getting all of the Conference Meet items taken care of. But, wanted to get the results out to everyone.
Thanks for all that came out and supported the skiers today!!

Tuesday, Feb 16

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post about Tuesday is that we will be waxing skis after practice at the High School downstairs.  Knowing that we will be racing on back to back days, we will wax both pairs of skis.  This still should not take too long, and most can get done in about 20 mins.
Thanks

Changes Due to Weather and Picture Info

There two things that will be changing over the next few days due to the weather:

First, Friday, we will not be meeting person or having an outside workout.  With temps supposed to be around -4 to -6 during practice time, we have decided to not meet.  However, we will be having a Virtual Strength Training session at 4:15 along with a video assignment for everyone.

Second, we have moved picture day to Tuesday at 3:30 due to the fact that it is currently to be around -10 at 10:00 when we were schedule pictures.  Below is the information on pictures:
Tuesday will be team pictures as well as a normal practice.  Pictures will be different this year in that we are not allowed a "Team" photo but also they have a new way of ordering pics.  You will not need to have a form filled out before, and in fact all orders will be done online.  What you will need to do is text the code PGET84325 to 90738 and then David Banks Studios will notify you when the pictures are available to be viewed and ordered.  Please note that this will be about a one week period, so you will not be able to order them until you have been notified.

If there are any questions, please let me know,
Thanks,
Denny

Practice Today

We will be practicing today, Thursday. We will be classic at Bunker camp ground.

Info for the Week of Feb 8

Below is the basics for practice this week.  Couple things of note, there is a high chance that our meet on Thursday is going to be moved to the following Wednesday due to the weather.  It has not been made official yet, but once I hear I will post it and change the schedule.  Also, in regards to the weather, the end of the week is actually looking colder than what we just went through, so things may get changed or even cancelled depending on what happens as well as what the school district allows us to do.  But, we do want everyone wearing hats this week, no headbands please, to have their masks/gators on the whole time to help prevent frostbite.  We will be doing workouts where the skiers will be moving almost the whole time in order to help from freezing.

Two other quick notes, the team pictures are going to be on Monday, Feb 15 at 10:00am at Bunker Memorial.  This was the best time that worked with the photographers but also that would fit into what could be our schedule.  Lastly, every year at certain meets there are t-shirt sales, and even though we don't know who will be on our Section teams yet, they are asking for those interested in purchasing one to do so by Sunday, Feb 14 so that they can be made and separated for each team by the actual date of the race.  If you would like to purchase one, even if you don't get to ski, go to the following link to order: https://section5nordicski2021.itemorder.com/

Here are is the week ahead:

Monday, Classic, Bunker Campground
Tuesday, Skate, Bunker Campground
Wednesday, Skate, Bunker Campground
Thursday, Classic Race at Bunker Memorial or Skate Practice at Bunker Campground
Friday, Skate,  Bunker Campground

Thanks and stay warm,
Denny

Friday and Saturday

Couple of updates for the next two days of practice. We will be moving the location for Friday’s practice to the campground due to the high winds.  As for Saturday, we would like for the skiers to do their goal workout of long hill repeats, at locations like Battle Creek in St Paul or Theo Wirth in Minneapolis, however, with the temps and winds that we are to have, we want this to be where families discuss and skiers do the workout if the family is comfortable with the conditions. For us as coaches, the safety of the skiers is first and we would not want to put a skier out in tough conditions if a family is not comfortable with it. We will discuss this with the skiers tomorrow, Friday, at practice, emphasizing the importance of health over skiing in something that could possibly be dangerous to them, as well as give them alternatives they can do at home.
Thanks,
Denny

Next Meet Changed

Due to the possible cold weather on Monday, we have changed the date and location of our next meet.  We will move our Monday meet at Elm Creek to Thursday at Bunker, starting and finishing at the Memorial and using the trails by the camp ground.  The Girls will be skiing first at 3:00 and the Boys will go at 3:45, both in Classic style.  As we get closer we will get more information.
Thanks

Monday Meet Result

The Overall and our Individual results from today's Skate Race at Elm Creek are now posted on the right side of the blog.  Despite racing against Park Center and Spring Lake Park, the Overall results are combined with Blaine, Anoka, and Andover who all raced before us at Elm Creek.  Thus, team and individual results are based on both of those races.

However, the Cardinal skiers held their own and despite having been in their 3rd race in 7 days with a hard workout in there as well, they skied hard all the way to the finish.  The Boy's finished in 3rd out of 6 teams but were 1st in our section.  The Girl's finished in 4th out of the 6 teams there today, 2nd in our section.  Individual times are different than the last time we raced at Elm Creek, but this is due to the fact that they did ski a course today that was about 200 meters longer and part of that was on natural snow, which skis differently and usually slower than man made snow.  So we don't always base how they did on their times.  Today we saw much improvement with our overall stamina, improvements with technique and more comfort with how to race.  We also saw a positive energy and much support from both the Girls and the Boys for one another!! This helps the growth and development of the team more than anything, it makes it fun too!!

Now, though, we take a slight step back, start looking at where we can make improvements with everyone's technique, and spend a couple of days doing some easier skiing and fixing the technical issues that we need to do so everyone can improve.

Thanks again to all of the parents that were out and supporting the skiers and to those that have taken pictures once again.

Thanks,
Denny
